School Assembly Programs
Exotic Birds & Endangered Species Educational Workshops
The Course & Heading:
"Through this hands on program, two colorfully dressed "pirates" give students (and teachers) the opportunity to learn about and experience the wonders of highly trained large parrots. Captain Chris and first-mate Gudrun, share not only their knowledge of and love for these magnificent birds, but also tips on how to help assure the survival of these and other endangered species." Bird World Magazine
The Sails & Rigging:
The program is conducted as a series of 50-60 minute workshops (up to six in one day) with a suggested capacity of 50-75 students per workshop (two classes per group works well). The workshops are divided into three sections: lecture & demonstrations, petting & handling, and questions & answers. To assure sufficient time for the hands on portion, the length of the sections will vary according to the number of students in each workshop.
During the Lecture & Demonstration portion (20-30 min), students learn about different aspects of parrot behavior and care. Also discussed are the dangers facing wild parrots and things we all can do to help make a positive difference for parrots and the environment (Recycling). Interactive student exercises, nine types of parrots, parrot flights, speech, and "trick" demonstrations thrill the students (and teachers) throughout the lecture.
The Petting & Handling portion (length varies with size of group) is the central focus of this program and gives the students (and teachers) the "once in a lifetime" chance to pet, hold, and even cuddle the magnificent feathered "stars" of this program. Each child usually can hold or pet four birds.
The Question & Answer portion (5-10 min) gives the students (and teachers) the opportunity to interact with the Captain about subjects of particular interest. Common subjects: parrot care, training, and breeding, both in captivity and in the wild.
